A Look Into Our Stainless Steel Metal Artisan Keycaps

Creating the most luxurious metal keycap

At the heart of our passion for mechanical keyboards lies a commitment to quality and innovation, evident in the crafting of our stainless steel keycaps. Designed for those who appreciate both durability and aesthetic elegance, these keycaps transform any keyboard into a luxury item. We will delve into the meticulous manufacturing process that brings our PVD coated artisan keycaps to life, showcasing finishes in gold, silver, black, rose gold, and a prismatic anodization.

Design and Precision Engineering

Our journey begins with a deliberate choice in the design phase: the R4 1u Cherry profile. This profile is not only renowned for its iconic shape but is also the most common keycap replaced by artisans, serving as a focal point for aesthetics on many mechanical keyboards. It's the ideal canvas for our metal keycap, chosen specifically for its widespread use and significant impact on the keyboard's visual appeal. Using CAD software, the shape is closely designed to mirror R4 specifications.

Selecting 316 Stainless Steel

The choice of material is crucial. We select premium-grade 316 stainless steel for its superior strength, corrosion resistance, and sleek appearance. It also acts as the perfect base to polish and apply additional coatings.

Pros:

  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent against rust, perfect for frequent use.
  • Durability: Tough and strong, ensuring longevity.
  • Aesthetic: Provides a luxurious shine, enhancing PVD coating visuals.

Cons:

  • Weight: Heavier than other materials, altered typing experience.
  • Cost: Solid metal comes at a higher price vs resin/plastic alternatives.
  • Tolerance: Low flex can make for tight/loose fits on the large variety of switch stems.

CNC Machining

Precision-cut using CNC machining, the 316 stainless steel is shaped to our 3D design. This process allows for intricate details and sharp lines, specifically the stem which requires tight tolerances to fit snug on mechanical switches. CNC machining ensures consistency and quality in every piece.

Polishing and Preparation

After machining, each keycap is polished to remove imperfections and prepare the surface for PVD coating. This step ensures a smooth, reflective finish that enhances the aesthetic appeal of the final product.

PVD Coating

Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) gives our keycaps their vibrant color and wear-resistant finish. This advanced technique involves vaporizing metal and depositing it onto the keycaps in a uniform layer, resulting in a range of luxurious finishes.
